When Our Teams’ Success Comes Together at the Same Time

This is like Chuck E. Cheese for adults.

It really is.

We’ve talked about this before, and we’re going to talk about it again — and perhaps again and again and again, as long as it lasts, which we hope will be a very long time — because it hasn’t happened much. In fact, it hasn’t happened for decades.

That is, the Browns and Guardians being good at the same time.

The Browns have won three in a row and are 3-1 tied with the Baltimore Ravens for first place in the AFC North as they face the New York Jets on the road at 1 p.m. Sunday. But before that happens, the Guardians will play the Chicago White Sox at 8 p.m. Saturday in the winner-take-all Game 5 of their American League Division Series.

The last time that the Indians, the predecessors of the Guardians, and the Browns were both good at the same time consistently was back in the late 1940s through the 1950s. Yes, it has been that long.

You’re going back almost three-quarters of a century. Were there dinosaurs then? No, but it may seem like it for the young, and maybe even the young at heart as well.

And before the Browns and Guardians play, we have an extra factor in the equation for the weekend with the Ohio State Buckeyes football team, in contention for a national championship once again, meeting Maryland earlier Saturday, at 4:15 p.m., at Ohio Stadium.

Yes, it is good to be an Ohioan.

Former Browns head coach Sam Rutigliano has always called it “the audacity of hope.” And that is indeed what we have right now, the hope that all this really can come together and give us a chance at a championship in multiple sports at the same time. We see it happening before our very eyes.

Gosh, how cool is that?!

You can be fans of several teams, especially in your market, or even the market in which you grew up if you’re transplanted somewhere else now. To be sure, home is where your heart is, and our hearts are here.

You can root for them all, and sometimes they may even be playing opposite of of one another.

That is like having your favorite dessert to eat, and then to have more of it be made available to you. Go ahead and be a glutton.

My good friend, Steve Doerschuk, a longtime writer and columnist for the Canton Repository, calls it “happy days on the fields.”

That is a great way to term it, for no matter how far we look, we see nothing but happiness and winning and joy and the mention of championships. That’s great thing to have. Too many times over the years with our teams, at least most of them, it has been looking out into a barren wasteland. A drought ensued, and it just didn’t give in.

Now we see something different — the fruited plain, as it were — and it makes us happy, which it should. Take full advantage of it. There is no guarantee that it will last beyond the very minute in which we now find ourselves

We will be glued to the TV all weekend. And that’s not a bad thing at all.

Pass the chips and the soft drinks.
