Perhaps – or perhaps not – the Browns are set with who they are going to take with the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft in just under five weeks.
A lot of people are saying that USC quarterback Sam Darnold nailed down that spot with his lights-out performance at the school’s pro day on Wednesday.
That remains to be seen – I certainly have my doubts, as I expressed in my last post — but at least that’s where it stands in the minds of the people who are considered to be experts.
Conversely, there seems to be no real front-runner for who the Browns will select just three picks later, at No. 4 overall – provided, of course, they stay there and don’t trade out of the spot.
I would like to see them take Penn State running back Saquon Barkley at 4 regardless of who – what quarterback – they draft at 1. Yes, the Browns signed former Ohio State star Carlos Hyde in free agency, but he may be simply the bridge running back to the franchise guy they would get at 4 if they picked Barkley. After all, the Browns traded for a bridge quarterback in Tyrod Taylor and yet it is almost certain that they will draft a quarterback at 1. So why can’t they do the same at running back?
But for every person who likes Barkley, thought to be the overall prospect in the draft, at 4, there are just as many who favor South Carolina defensive end Bradley Chubb or Alabama cornerback Minkah Fitzpatrick.
The Browns have fortified themselves in the defensive backfield in free agency with several signings, including most recently that of former Buffalo Bills cornerback E.J. Gaines on Friday. But again, with the way teams line up in multiple-wide receiver sets and throw the ball these days, you can never have enough good cover corners.
In the same way, Chubb is the best pass rusher in the draft, and the best way to stop a passing offense is to get to the quarterback before he can throw the ball.
Chubb, Fitzpatrick, Barkley or someone else, we’ll see how that fourth overall pick evolves in these final weeks heading into the draft. Whatever happens, it promises to be interesting.
