A DONE DEAL? ALREADY?

Browns fans, you are the best fans in all of pro sports.

You guys – and ladies – are experts of the highest degree. You have forgotten more about football in the last 10 minutes than the fanbases of all the other NFL teams – combined – could ever know in 10 lifetimes.

So, considering all that, then, what do you think about this buzz concerning USC quarterback Sam Darnold after his supposedly, allegedly, reportedly sensational performance at the school’s Pro Day on Wednesday?

It is said that he proved he could not only make all the throws, and do it accurately, but also that he could do it in the rain, which he would obviously face in Cleveland’s fall and winter weather if he were to be taken by the Browns with the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft in about five weeks.

In addition, it is said that Darnold, who was already believed by many to be the Browns’ choice to be drafted, solidified himself in that regard. He put an exclamation point behind that assertion.

Hmmm.

Do you believe that Darnold did indeed close the deal and that it is a fait accompli that he is coming here – to Cleveland — to be the franchise quarterback?

It is possible – quite possible; it wouldn’t surprise me at all — that that is indeed the case. Though they all have fatal flaws, it is generally thought by the so-called “experts,” whomever they are, that Darnold is the most complete of the four top quarterbacks being considered by all the teams at the top of the draft.

But after doing this – writing about the Browns and pro football for nearly 30 years – I am just not totally convinced – or even remotely convinced, for that matter – that this horse race is over. I’m just not.

It is much too early in the process for that. There are a lot of things that can – and likely will — happen to change the whole course of this process.

Let’s let it all play out and see what the Browns think of the other three quarterbacks – UCLA’s Josh Rosen, Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield and Wyoming’s Josh Allen – before we just cede the top spot to Darnold.

But what do you think?
