WHAT ARE DORSEY AND HUE REALLY THINKING?
By STEVE KING
General Manager John Dorsey and head coach Hue Jackson will address the media on Wednesday, the day before the Browns open training camp.
Events such as this press conference are exactly why brownsdailydose.com was created back in 2015. It was to cut through all the fluff and let readers know what Dorsey and Jackson mean, regardless of what they say. I don’t listen to what people say in these interviews as much as I focus on how they say it.
What’s the inflection in their voice? How does it change depending on the questions asked?
What’s their body language, and how that does that change in the same regard?
Most people are bad liars – bad actors. They have a hard time hiding their true thoughts and feelings. Some way, somehow, it comes out. You just have to be patient enough to keep looking for it until it happens.
Dorsey is in full control here. He was brought in to get the Browns turned around as quickly as possible. Enough of this incessant losing, owners Jimmy and Dee Haslam told him in no uncertain terms.
He retained Jackson as coach only because the Haslams asked him to do so. Otherwise, Dorsey would have fired Jackson as he walked into Browns Headquarters on his first day on the job. It’s what a GM does – it’s what he has to do; he has no choice – when a coach follows up a 1-15 record in his first season with an 0-16 mark in the next.
Jackson knows that full well – who doesn’t? – and is as nervous as all get out. Wouldn’t you be, too, in that situation?
Compounding Jackson’s angst is the fact Dorsey hired a man with whom he has a history, Todd Haley, as offensive coordinator. As such, the GM ripped control of the offense from Jackson and gave it to Haley. Jackson was all about running the offense and calling the plays, but that’s over.
If the Browns get off to a slow start, then Dorsey will fire Jackson and promote Haley, who has NFL head coaching experience, to the position.
None of that is any secret. With that in mind, then, keep an eye on how Dorsey and Jackson act not just Wednesday, but in every other way, shape and form going forward. It will tell you everything you need to know.
