THE TRUTH IS THIS: THE BROWNS USED COMMON SENSE IN TAKING GARRETT

Taking a common-sense approach is just like telling the truth in that it is always – always! — the best policy.

No matter what the subject, sports or otherwise, it has been that way since time began – literally, since life on this earth began.

A common-sense approach is … well, applying common sense. What could be better than that?

Well, to keep doing it, but we’ll see about that.

With that having been said, then, let’s applaud the Browns for doing the ordinary – what is blatantly obvious to everyone – by taking the best player on the board – on everyone’s board, really, and by a country mile – in selecting Texas A&M defensive end Myles Garrett at No. 1 overall in the 2017 NFL Draft on Thursday night.

The Browns, of course, need a quarterback – desperately so. They’ve needed one since midway through the 1993 season when Bernie Kosar was sent packing. But there’s no quarterback worth taking at the very top of the draft.

So instead of forcing the issue, they let clear thinking prevail and took a player at another place of need, edge pass-rusher. In finishing a franchise- and NFL-worst 1-15 last season, they have a lot of areas of need. As such, while they continue to look for a quarterback, which is the most important piece of the puzzle in this complete rebuild, they need to continue to add quality players – as many as they possibly can. Garrett is one of those guys. Indeed, unless everyone is wrong, he is definitely one of those guys.

With five picks in the top 65 overall, including at Nos. 12 and 33, the Browns have plenty of firepower in attacking those needs.

It sounds simple, but the Browns – and a lot of other teams, in fact – have tended to make it complicated, and in doing so, they have cut the legs out from under themselves draft and draft after draft in this expansion era. It is the clear, No. 1 reason why they’ve struggled so much since 1999.

But perhaps the tide is turning in that regard.

At last the early returns Thursday indicate that it is the case, and Browns fans, who are the most knowledgeable in the league, have to be thrilled.
