BROWNS’ TOP BRASS MUST GET IT RIGHT OR GET FIRED

The 2017 NFL Draft is almost here.

Finally.

Fans throughout the country, and especially in Cleveland, have been discussing the draft for months now, going all the way back to last season.

Yes, pro football is the only sport where there is a sport – the draft — within a sport.

In any event, that second sport is now just hours away.

With five picks in top 65, including Nos, 1, 12 and 33, the Browns own the top of the draft. As such, they will wear out the linoleum in Philadelphia running up to the front of the room to turn in their selections.

So what will they do?

Good question. Only they know, and they’re not saying – at least publicly. Why would they? Loose lips sink ships.

At No. 1, will it be Myles Garrett, as many people, including me, think?

That remains to be seen.

Or will it be quarterback Mitchell Trubisky, as some insist?

Indeed, will the Browns take Trubisky – or Garrett – at No. 1 and then use their No. 12 pick as collateral to trade back up into the top 10 and get their pass rusher, or quarterback?

That remains to be seen as well.

How about this: could the Browns, should they take Trubisky – or Garrett — at No. 1, trade up twice in the first round by using their No. 33 pick and other selections, this year and next?

Again, yes they could. Everything – and I do mean everything — is on the table.

For that matter, the Browns could keep all of their first five picks – those precious first five picks that they fought so hard to acquire – and just attack some of their many needs?

Yes. In fact, that may make the most sense of all.

The Browns could end up doing a lot of things, but no matter what their plan of attack, what they absolutely must do – above all else – is get it right. Yes, very simply, get it right, which is very hard to do – and even harder for them to do in this expansion era.

This is, without question, a pivotal draft for the Browns because of all these picks and the way the franchise has struggled, and last year bottomed out. Some argue – and they are right – that it is the most pivotal draft in the team’s history. As such, Sashi Brown and his guys have the opportunity to transform this franchise in one fell swoop like it has never been transformed before.

But to do that – and set the club up for years to come – they have to get it right. And those who do it would be canonized in football-crazy Cleveland, where the fans are starved for s winner.

But if the Browns mess it up, thry will set themselves back years and all those making the picks will eventually pay for their misdeeds with their jobs.

It’s no more complicated than that.

So, what will it be?

The story will begin to be written Thursday evening just as the sun is setting. It could be the dawn of a new era for the Browns, or a lot more darkness.
