THE BAKER MAYFIELD PROJECT IS VAN PELT’S ONLY REAL JOB

Will Alex Van Pelt be a success in his new job as offensive coordinator of the Browns?

In the most basic sense, who knows?

But Van Pelt will likely not be calling plays, which is one of the biggest jobs of an offensive coordinator. At least the bulk of it will be done by new head coach Kevin Stefanski, whose professional livelihood in Cleveland will be determined by his winning games, which will be determined greatly by his being able to get the offense going.

And, make no mistake about it, that offense is not going to hum, and those wins are not going to come, if quarterback Baker Mayfield doesn’t get back on track. As I like to say, quarterback is the most important position in team sports. If you’ve got a good one, then you have a chance, regardless of what the rest of the team looks like. And if you don’t, then you don’t. It’s really that simple.

So, then, the most important job – the only real job – of Van Pelt will be The Baker Mayfield Project and making him the franchise quarterback – and the ultimate difference-maker – the Browns drafted him No. 1 overall to be. Yes, Mayfield, the difference-maker. It has a nice little ring – or perhaps even a really cool ring — to it, doesn’t it?

Van Pelt is supposed to be a good developer of quarterbacks. If he’s smart – and he is, he really, truly is – then he will check his ego at the door as far as all the traditional jobs that go with being an offensive coordinator, and get knee-deep in, The Baker Mayfield Project as it’s now been coined.

For, just like defensive coordinator Joe Woods’ single biggest task being getting end Myles Garrett to realize his potential, Van Pelt’s single biggest task will be getting Garrett to realize his.

Wouldn’t it be something if both Myles Garrett and Baker Mayfield take quantum leaps forward in 2020? Think about what that would do for the Browns.
