Rooting for Joe Woods

The NFL is an unforgiving sport.

It is a bottom-line business, and when the bottom line is not reached, people pay for it with their jobs.

That’s what happened to Joe Woods when he was with the Browns. He did not do the job as defensive coordinator, so he got fired at the end of this season.

Perhaps Woods will never be a great defensive coordinator  — we’ll just have to wait and see on that — but Woods knows defense. He just couldn’t teach it well enough to his players.

Woods is a really good guy, though, and you really route for people like that. And that is why I’m rooting for him in his new job as defensive coordinator of the New Orleans Saints.

Woods won’t be making the defensive calls with the Saints, as he will simply be implementing the calls of the head coach, who is the real defensive coordinator. It is a job that will suit him well as he moves forward, trying to recover from what happened in Cleveland.

I certainly hope that happens, not for the benefit of the Saints because I could care less about them. I hope they do it for Joe Woods, because it would be a nice story to say that a very fine man took full advantage of a second chance.
