Post Schobert era? What’s the Browns plan?
By STEVE KING
OK, so the Browns will let linebacker Joe Schobert walk in free agency.
That certainly seems like a risky move, as Schobert was one of the defense’s best players – and perhaps even the best, period — over a relatively long period of time by Browns’ standards, The case could be made for that, and it would be hard to argue against it.

Letting players go is always easy for new head coaches and general managers coming in, as is the case – yet again, still – for the Browns with first-timers Kevin Stefanski and Andrew Berry, respectively. That’s what recently-hired leadership guys do in that they bring in a big broom and sweep out the door everything and everybody they see.
It’s like when you buy that house – especially the first one – and you toss into the garbage, or at least set out by the curb for the trash man or for a neighbor or picker to take, all that you find. You want to put your stamp on your purchase to really, truly make it your own, and so you do, with much glee and satisfaction.
But, as mentioned, that’s the simple part, pulling up the carpet, ripping out the shrubbery and steaming away the wallpaper. Now that it’s all gone, what do you do? That is, with what do you replace it? What’s next? What’s your plan? Remember, you have to find a new item for each item you tossed?
That’s where the Browns are at now. Who’s the replacement for Schobert? He wanted to stay, but the Browns didn’t want him. Will they find someone better? They had better. Or will they end up with someone worse? They had better not.
The Browns aren’t good enough to give away good players, smart players and team-first players. They’re just not.
They needed to build around Schobert, not without him. They didn’t need to create another hole to fill. They needed to fill the ones they already have.
I hope not, but I really think the Browns are going to regret this one. I think that all the Browns’ smart guys outsmarted themselves, out-thought themselves.
But we will see in the Post Schobert era.
