What’s on my mind:
The Browns arch-rivals, the Pittsburgh Steelers, took a couple giant leaps forward at the most important position in teams sports over the last several days.
First, they signed, for the veterans’ minimum, quarterback Russell, Wilson, who, in the twilight of his career, will probably begin the season as a starter and hold down the fort — perhaps Fort Pitt — until the job is turned over to Justin Fields, the player they acquired in a trade with the Chicago Bears, giving up absolutely nothing.
So, the Steelers get their quarterback of the near future in Wilson, and for the foreseeable future in Fields, in the process getting rid of guys like Kenny Pickett, Mason Rudolph, Mitch Trubisky and all the rest who had failed them — both on and off the field — in recent seasons after the retirement of Ben Roethlisberger.
If you have a quarterback, then you have a chance, and the Steelers have a better chance with Wilson and, especially, Fields.
Fields is the real gem here. He was in a horrible situation with the Bears, a bad team with bad coaching and bad players around him. He didn’t have a chance to succeed.
In Pittsburgh, he will be coming to a team that is much better, has much, much better coaching and will have much better players around him.
The Steelers still need to find him some targets to throw to, and I am sure they will do that because they are good at player procurement. They now have a plan going forward, whereas before, they were meandering about, kind of like a rudderless ship.
In the same breath, the Steelers have made it clear that they are going to follow up on their words of wanting players who want to be there. Anyone who doesn’t want to be there will be shown the door. The Steelers want players who are all in, because you have to have players like that if you’re going to succeed. It is the second most important thing to having a great quarterback, and a great head coach, which they already had in Mike Tomlin.
The Steelers are set to make a move maybe not way up in the standings in the AFC North right away, but certainly down the road at some point, nd at some point soon. The Browns, Cincinnati Bengals and Baltimore Ravens had better take note. They need to keep improving themselves, so they can keep up with Pittsburgh.
One more thing about Fields is that he just needed a place to give him a chance where he had a chance to succeed. He has a lot of talent, as Ohio State fans saw. He will be showcasing that talent. You just wait and see.
