OFFENSIVE LINEMAN NEEDED IN CLEVELAND – THE LINE, THE LINE, THE LINE

By STEVE KING

Offensive lineman needed – you can never have enough of a good thing, right?

In football, especially the NFL, an offensive line is a good thing. In fact, it is a real good thing in that it protects the quarterback – hopefully a franchise one – and it paves the way for the running game so as to chew up yards, move the chains and chew up clock, letting the defense rest and at the same time wearing out the opposing defense by keeping it on the field.

So, then, if a team has a good offensive line, then it has gone a long way to having the tools necessary to have a good season.

A line needs five good starters and some capable and versatile backups. The Browns don’t have a good line at all. In fact, they don’t even have a mediocre one. It’s terrible. It was not very good going into last season and got worse and worse as the year went on. The bad line is in no small way a reason why quarterback Baker Mayfield struggled and, in turn, the offense as a whole, and the team overall, struggled.

This is not rocket science, folks.

As such, the Browns need all kinds of help on the line to avoid having what happened in 2019 repeat itself in 2020. They need three starters – both left and right tackles and another guard to go along with Joel Bitonio and center JC Tretter.

Yeah, this position area is almost a complete re-do – at least 60-percent such.

With the free-agency signing period ready to start Wednesday and the NFL Draft coming up in about five weeks – unless there are changes, which is entirely possible – I would be thrilled if – I hope and pray that – the Browns sign two high-profile offensive linemen in free agency and use their first two draft picks to get offensive linemen.

It would be a great strategy, and it would make the team immediately better – at least on paper.

The Browns don’t need sexy signings and draft picks. “Offensive lineman needed” is an understatement in Cleveland.
