No Primetime, No Buzz, No Breaks: The Browns’ Uninspiring Schedule

Is it just me, or do you also think that this is one of the most unattractive Browns schedules you’ve seen in quite a while?

I know that part of the problem is that games against the non-AFC North teams were already pre-determined as to the opponents and where they would be played. There is just one primetime game, and I am content to live with that because we have to, and it’s a good thing since the Browns aren’t ready for primetime yet. However, the order of the games is not great, either.

Put it all together, and it’s really unappealing.

Here are the top 10 blah aspects of the schedule, in no particular order:

1) A season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Like getting socks for Christmas. It isn’t going to move the meter in Cleveland for fans watching on TV.

2)Two road games to start the season. This is a young team that is building, so what happens if the Browns start 0-2? That would be a disaster, but it’s certainly a possibility since that Week 2 opponent is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

3)Wouldn’t it have been great if this game were in Cleveland and quarterback Baker Mayfield was returning here ?

4)A home opener against the Carolina Panthers. That isn’t going to move the meter in Cleveland, either.

5)Playing the Giants and Jets both in New York. That should be against the law. It would have been great if that Giants game was in Cleveland and John Harbaugh was coming back to a place he knows well.

6)Three road games in a row. It’s the NFL’s answer to an Ironman competition, or the Bataan Death March.

7)Three straight home games. That’s too much the other way.

8)A bye around Thanksgiving. That’s the time of year when the NFL season really heats up.

9)No home game around Christmas. That’s the time of year when a lot of displaced Browns fans return home to visit family and and take in a game.

10)Finishing the season against the Bengals again, and in Cincinnati again. Are there other teams, and venues, in the division?
