Five more keys to improvement

Everybody knows the five things the Browns need to do personnel – wise to get better.

They need to get a speedy, game-breaking wide receiver who can take the top off a defense.

They need to get a little better along the offensive line.

They need to get some better linebackers.

They need to get three starters along the defensive line to go along with Myles Garrett.

And they need a back-up quarterback to play behind Deshaun Watson.

But what are the five things they need to do in terms of their mindset?

They need to play like their hair is on fire. They play with no sense of urgency. Sometimes they bring their emotions, and sometimes they don’t. They need to play hard all the time.

They need to play to win. They need to learn how to win. It is as if the scoreboard doesn’t matter. It does, and they have to understand that.

They need to have some imagination on offense. Too many times, they get stagnant and boring. They need to have someone who is willing to take a chance and and try something different.

They need to be able to make adjustments after the other team makes adjustments to the way the Browns started the game. Their first plan is great on both sides of the ball, but when the opposition counters that, the Browns can’t answer.

They need to cut out all the side chatter. The Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles don’t get involved in side chatter, and it shows. This game is hard enough. You don’t need to waste your breath running your mouth on social media in addition to that.

And the Browns need to play smart. Every time an opposing player who has the ball gets near the sideline any Browns defender approaches him, I hold my breath that he doesn’t deliver a hit three or four yards out of bounds, and get called for a personal file. It happens time and time and time again. That’s just stupid, and it has to stop.
