A FAMILIAR, SAD CHORUS

We’ve seen this all before.

Way, way, way too many times.

Everybody gets so excited about Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon, and then he never makes it back onto the field.

And it’s happening again.

Gordon wowed everyone in 2013 when, in just 14 games, he led the NFL with a Browns-record 1,646 yards receiving.

But he’s played only part of a season since then, in 2014. He missed all of 2015 and ’16 and has yet to play thus far in ’17, but he has returned to the team and could possibly see action on Dec. 3 when the Browns are on the road to face the Los Angeles Chargers.

The reason for all that missed time?

He’s been suspended for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. He can’t keep himself off drugs, no matter how hard he has tried.

It’s a shame for him.

It’s a shame for the Browns.

And it’s a shame for the fans, who get all wound up, only to be let down in the end.

I wish I could say it will be different this time, but I can’t.

It will almost certainly turn out just like all the other times in that he’ll get suspended again.

He’s a big tease because he’s a big, strong guy who can run downfield and make big plays. No one can really cover him because he’s too big and strong for cornerbacks and too fast for safeties. He’s a match-up nightmare.

But the real nightmare is that he can’t match-up with life. The harsh realities of trying unsuccessfully to behave himself and be responsible off the field keep intercepting his and everyone else’s dreams for him.

No, I’m afraid the Browns are going to have to do this complete rebuild without any help from Josh Gordon. Instead of hoping and praying he returns to the football field before it’s too late, we should be responsible ourselves and hope and pray he gets his life straightened out before it’s too late.
