The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are this year’s version of the 2019 Browns.

That is, at a time when it really hasn’t warmed up yet in northern states from the cold with which last season ended, the Bucs have already been christened as the 2020 darlings of the NFL, regardless of whether there is a season or not. It doesn’t matter. Common sense doesn’t matter one bit in the land of sports hype.

The Bucs now have quarterback Tom Brady.

They also now have tight end Ron Gronkowski.

And if you believe the rumors – and there’s no reason to disbelieve them – then they could also end up soon with left tackle Trent Williams.

Woohoo!!!

The Bucs have gone from being … well, the Bucs, to serious Super Bowl contenders out of the NFC. Heck, forget about being contenders to just get to the Super Bowl. They’re contenders to win it.

Look out, Patrick Mahomes and the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs, because here come … the Bucs?

Just after they traded for Gronkowski, there was, not surprisingly, an NFL Network talking-heads program about the Bucs. The question put to those on the panel was: “Is this the best offense that Tom Brady has ever been a part of?”

The first panelist they went to was former San Francisco 49ers and Detroit Lions head coach Steve Mariucci. Marucci didn’t win in Detroit – who does? – but he won in San Francisco. So, he knows his football and, in being 64 years old, he has a real sense of the league’s history, both recent and way back and can cut through the junk and see things for what they are.

His response was priceless, and put this whole Bucs hype hullabaloo into its proper perspective.

He began chuckling, as if what he was being asked was utterly preposterous and, in no way, shape or form, deserved to be taken seriously.

“I mean, come on, Tom Brady has been to nine Super Bowls, and has won six of them,” Mariucci said with more than a bit of sarcasm in his voice.

Then, fortunately for him and his job security, he stopped himself, thought for a second, decided he liked working for NFL Network, wiped the incredulous smile off his face and began answering the question like a scientist breaking down Einstein’s theory of relativity.

Good for the man they “Mooch.” He’ll keep getting a paycheck.

Good for the Bucs, especially 67-year-old head coach Bruce Arians, the former Browns offensive coordinator who, in being one of the NFL’s real good guys, deserves a chance to be thrust into the spotlight for what could be the last time in his professional career.

And, more than anything, good for the Browns, because they don’t have to deal with all that nonsense again.

The Bucs are the 2019 Browns and Cleveland will gladly step aside.
