Browns Lose to Jets

NO LOW-HANGING FRUIT GRABS

We could grab the low-hanging fruit and beat up the Browns until the cows come home for all the mistakes they made in a 17–12 loss to the host New York Jets on Sunday.

They did everything they could to win the game, and it looked like they were going to win it. Then they did everything that they could do to lose the game, and that’s the part of it that won out.

They dropped a game, literally and figuratively. They dropped punt snaps, they dropped passes and they dropped offensive snaps. Indeed, they let the game slip through their fingers,  again literally and figuratively..l

But enough of that. We’re not going to do any more of that. It’s boring and stupid and repetitive. You can read that anywhere else in the reporting on this game. We want to be a little — or a lot, as it were — different here.

This is a young Browns team, and it is trying to emerge from the depths of what has been a losing situation for way too long. You can learn how to play the game, but you must also learn how to win. The Browns appear to do that the previous three weeks, pulling games out of the fire at the end. But what they found out on Sunday is that you have you have to play right to the very end and make sure that everything you do down the stretch is done well. Everything they did well down the stretch against the Jets, they undid it by doing something silly.

There’s nothing that can be done about that now, other than to learn from it. And if the Browns don’t learn from it, then that’s so much bigger loss than what Sunday’s game was. Teams on the way up go through these things, and if the Browns view themselves as a team on its way up — and they should, because that’s who and what they are — then they must go through this process and grow from it, mature from it, and make it a point never to do it again.

By losing, they undid all the good they displayedby beating Pittsburgh two weeks ago. But if they can beat the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday at Huntington Bank Field, then they can wipe away all the bad that came out of the Jets game. This is how the stuff works, and that you’re always moving forward, looking forward and trying to be better today than you were yesterday.

It’s up to them. Do the Browns want to think about the past, or do they want to think about the future. And the way to think about the future is by handling things in the present.
