As much as I didn’t like what the Browns did on Thursday night in the first round of the NFL Draft, and I didn’t like it one bit, I liked that much what they did on Friday night as rounds two and three were held in Pittsburgh.
They used their original second-round pick, at No. 39, to take Washington wide receiver Denzel Boston, a big, strong player whose physicality in going to football is what makes him stand out. He may not be the fastest guy in the world, but he’s fast enough, and. again, the ability to bring the ball down in a crowd will help him in this big man’s league.
And then the Browns, who, with General Mansger Andrew Berry, love trading out of picks, traded back up into the second round, to No. 58, and took Toledo safety Emmanuel McNeil-Warren. They didn’t take Caleb Downs on Thursday, OK I’m still upset about, but getting this guy, who can really play, especially when it comes to hitting, is a solid consolation price and will really help. Toledo has a history recently of producing defensive act recently.
Then the Browns, be still my beating hard, actually traded up again, this time into the third round at No. 86, and took Florida offensive tackle Austin Barber. For a team that struggled so much on the offensive line last season, getting young, talented tackles is never a bad idea.
So, Friday was a good day, after what I still truly believe was a bad day on Thursday. We’ll see what the Browns do on Saturday as the draft concludes with rounds four through seven, but they will be heading into it with a bunch of picks, five to be exact, with some real momentum.
