BEST THINGS JOHN DORSEY DIDN’T SAY
By STEVE KING
So, what were the best things John Dorsey didn’t say? As mentioned, Browns General Manager John Dorsey said a lot of things – a lot of interesting things — when he met with the Cleveland media last Wednesday.
But some of the best things – the things that will serve him and the Browns well going forward – are the best things John Dorsey didn’t say, what he wanted to say but refused to, and what he talked around very carefully.

First, there’s the team’s franchise quarterback, rookie Baker Mayfield. Everybody wants to believe he’s the guy – the one who will finally solve the Browns’ quarterback problems throughout the expansion era. Dorsey obviously believes that Mayfield’s the guy or else he wouldn’t have selected him No. 1 overall in the 2018 NFL Draft.
But he can’t say it – not yet, at least. He doesn’t want to build up Mayfield too much and put a huge weight on his shoulders.
So Dorsey didn’t say a whole lot when asked about Mayfield and his development.
“He is developing as a quarterback,” Dorsey said simply. “He is still a rookie quarterback. He has demonstrated certain things during the course of a game that get you excited. I think that if you would ask him as a person, he would say that he still has a lot more football to master the position that he plays. I think he will continue to do that.”
Not much there, huh?
That’s just the way Dorsey wanted it – and will continue to want it for the foreseeable future.
Now for the hot-button topic of the week for the Browns: former Cleveland head coach Hue Jackson being hired by the Bengals as the assistant to the head coach.
You know that Dorsey – and the rest of the top people on the Browns – are steamed about that sleazy move. But he kept his opinion to myself, and his focus to be looking ahead, not behind.
“I wish him the best,” Dorsey said. “It was hard a couple of weeks ago. Hue to the Bengals, I wish him the best. I wish him the best.”
Yeah, right.
