AT LEAST HUE’S WINNING THE PRESS CONFERENCES

When you have a game like the Browns did last Sunday, losing their quarterback, Robert Griffin III, and also their season opener 29-10 to the Philadelphia Eagles, it makes for a long week.

Media members will ask some tough questions, such as why the Browns totally messed up a fake punt, or why they couldn’t run the ball, or why they couldn’t stop the pass against a rookie quarterback they chose not to take in the NFL Draft.

Most head coaches hate having to do press conferences. And they hate them even more after their teams play like the Browns did at Lincoln Financial Field.

But the Browns’ Hue Jackson is not like most head coaches in that regard. He seems to like talking to reporters. He doesn’t get rattled when they fire tough questions at him. He just laughs and gives them honest answers.

The truth works every time it’s tried. The truth – if it’s negative – doesn’t have to be a club with which to hit someone over the head. It just has to be the truth.

Jackson understands that, and it’s something that will serve him well as he goes through the long, laborious task of rebuilding the Browns from the ground up. If he keeps the media members happy, then they might pump the brakes a little bit on their criticism. The worst thing he could do is get frustrated and/or angry and pick a fight with them. Jackson has enough problems as it is. He doesn’t need more.

Indeed, if Jackson fails to get wins right away, which will likely be the case, then at least he can keep winning the press conferences and thus buy himself some time.

You take wins any way you can get ’em.
