THE WRONG BRETT IS COMING T O TOWN

The Green Bay Packers, who visit the Browns on Sunday at FirstEnergy Stadium in Cleveland’s next-to-last home game of the year, are the prime example of why quarterback is the most important position in team sports.

Indeed, quarterback is everything. It is the be-all and end-all, all the time, for all-time.

If a team has a good quarterback, then it has a good chance. And if it doesn’t, then it has no chance.

It’s no more complicated than that. Really.

But back to the Packers.

When the NFL schedule came out last spring, Browns fans were delighted in finding out that the Packers were coming to town. It meant that they would get to see, in person, quarterback Aaron Rodgers, a future Pro Football Hall of Famer.

But that’s not going to be the case now. Rodgers injured his shoulder when he was the victim of a late hit by the Minnesota Vikings. If he returns this season, then it won’t be until at least the following Sunday, Dec. 17.

Good news for the Browns, Bad news for their fans.

Instead of Rodgers, they’ll have the privilege of seeing his replacement, Brett Hundley. That’s not Brett Favre, Rodgers’ predecessor in Green Bay and a Hall of Famer, but rather a guy who will forever have to pay the full admission fee if he wants to get into the Hall.

No disrespect to Hundley, but it will be like sitting down to watch “The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show” on TV and instead getting force-fed a special on tungsten. Or ordering prime rib but getting green eggs and ham in its place.

The loss of Rodgers has turned the Packers from a Super Bowl contender to a team that, if enough people go to church and light candles, might sneak into the playoffs as a wild card in an NFC that, despite what you may he hearing, seeing and reading, is really pretty underwhelming overall.

All this is why the Browns’ total rebuild really doesn’t start in essence until they get their franchise quarterback.
