Ohio State won its annual war with arch-rival Michigan with a 31-20 victory last Sunday.
But the Buckeyes lost a battle along the way with the alternative uniforms they were wearing.
Not cool.
Not at all.
Even the outstanding OSU radio team of Paul Keels and Jim Lachey, who never criticize the team for anything, could not find it in themselves to endorse the generic, all-white look. They openly questioned it, in fact, which is about as far off the reservation as they’ve ever strayed.
Sportsillustrated.com’s well-respected Peter King also gave the bland, colorless unis a thumbs-down in his popular Monday Morning Quarterback column on Monday.
But as bad as the Ohio State uniforms may have been, they looked a whole lot better than the uniforms the Browns have been wearing the last several years.
Awful. Just awful.
Some might say the winless Browns are playing like a high school team this season. But there’s no debating the fact their unis look like those of a high school team with “BROWNS” written up the side of the pants and “CLEVELAND” on the top of the numbers on the front of the jerseys.
Yikes! It’s egregious.
The uniforms were the brainchild of former Browns President Alec Scheiner, who always thought he was the smartest guy in the room when he was here.
Well, guess what? He was wrong. And those uniforms prove it.
The only thing worse than watching the Browns lose every week is watching them do it in that goofy attire.
I’m a traditionalist – can you tell? – but I’m fine with the Browns jazzing up their uniforms to appeal to younger fans. The team doesn’t care marketing itself to guys in their 60s. I get that. And I actually like the silhouetted numbers.
But that writing has to go. It has always looked amateurish when it first began appearing on some high school and college jerseys years ago. That the Browns also have it on the pants just makes it look that much worse.
I’m hoping – praying — that when the Browns have an opportunity to change their uniforms again, they take full advantage of it and let that classic plain orange helmet serve as the sign that these are the “CLEVELAND BROWNS.”
