Ohio State 2021 Sugar Bowl Champs
His name is Rob, and he lives in Metro Detroit.
Because of our friendship, he roots for the Browns and the Ohio State Buckeyes — except, of course, when they play his Detroit Lions and Michigan State Spartans, respectively.
As such, he will be pulling for the Browns when they meet the Pittsburgh Steelers in the first round of the AFC playoffs on Sunday night at Heinz Field, and then for the Buckeyes when they take on Alabama on Monday night in the national championship game of the College Football Playoff at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla.
Rob is a big sports fan overall, and a smart guy, and he will often give me great questions that make me really think. And early last Tuesday morning, he came up with the best question he’s ever asked me:
“Which scenario would you rather have, Ohio State beating Alabama to win the national championship, or the Browns beating Pittsburgh in the playoffs?”

Whoa!
Double-whoa!!
It’s like asking, “Would you rather have a bowl of Caramel Brownie Moose Tracks ice cream, or regular Moose Tracks ice cream?”
“Can I have both?” I replied..
“No,” Rob said sternly, “just one or the other.”
Ugh.
“Can I change it to the Browns beating someone to win the Super Bowl?” I countered.
“No, it’s about the games this weekend,” Rob said, refusing to budge.
Ugh, again.
A national championship is a national championship. It’s the pinnacle. It’s the top of the heap. And it would be the second such title for the Buckeyes since 2014.
So, then, that’s tempting.
But the Browns are the Browns. Beating the Steelers in their building, especially after the Browns got rocked there 38-7 three months ago, and particularly considering that they have already lost in Pittsburgh twice in the playoffs, in 1994 and 2002, the latter of which coming after they blew a 24-7 third-quarter lead, would be oh, so sweet, like good ice cream. It would chase away a lot of ghosts.
The Buckeyes are good every year. They should have another shot to win a national title, and soon.
But you don’t know that for sure. There are no guarantees. You have to seize upon the opportunity when it is there.
The Browns have a good, young team that should only get better and better over the next several years. This should be the start of a great run for them. They’ll have other chances.
But you don’t know that for sure, either. They haven’t been to the playoffs for 18 years. If it takes another 18 years to get back here, then you could be planted somewhere or sitting in a nursing home with a diaper on, not knowing what day it is. You have to strike while the iron is hot, as they say.
There is no easy answer. Perhaps there is no answer at all.
I really, truly don’t know.
Rob won’t like me copping out — not one bit.
He asked me a question, and he wants my answer.
OK, Caramel Brownie Moose Tracks.
That’s not one of the choices.
OK … ok … I’ll take … the … Browns.
I think.
What do you say, readers? Would you rather see the Browns or Buckeyes win?
