There’s nothing about the hiring of Todd Haley as Browns offensive coordinator that’s bad.
More specifically, it’s all good – really, really good.
When Browns head coach Hue Jackson started talking to former New York Giants head coach Ben McAdoo about the job, I got sick to my stomach. McAdoo’s offense was absolutely terrible in New York. Why would Jackson want to bring someone like that on board? Does Hue want to get fired? Adding McAdoo would have helped that along.
The offense is the chief problem with the Browns, and has been for a long time. You may have heard it’s the defense, or at least that the defense is as bad as the offense, but that’s just silly. There are no statistics to back up that contention. And when you take the eye test, you are even more convinced that it’s not right.
Bringing in Haley checks all the proper boxes.
He knows the AFC North after being in Pittsburgh.
He knows the Browns after scheming against them for so many years.
He wants to prove himself after getting pushed out the door by the Steelers, and serving as the fall guy for a team that, because of its head coach, Mike Tomlin, and not anything Haley did, was ill-prepared to play against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Next time, Big Mike, it will be you who gets pushed out the door.
Speaking of head coaches, Haley was one in Kansas City. Now Hue, in that his defensive coordinator is Gregg Williams, has two former NFL head coaches flanking him. That always helps on the sideline in game management, something with which Hue has struggled from time to time.
Haley knows quarterbacks. You might be aware that quarterback has been a big problem for the Browns for a long time.
Now, with the hiring of Haley, and John Dorsey as general manager, I’m much more confident that the Browns will find their quarterback(s), improve their offense, start winning some games and get out of this mess that they’re in.
And on another cold, cold January day, that’s a nice, positive thought to have.
