I try to be truthful and honest on this site all the time.
It’s what you, as readers, expect, and it’s what you should get.
Anything less would be … well, dishonest.
Sometimes I’m more brutally honest than others, and that’s been the case every time I’ve written about Browns head coach Hue Jackson’s need to win this season – early, especially, and when it’s all said and done – if he wants to keep his job. I think that’s more than fair. After being just 1-31 in two seasons, including 0-16 in 2017, it’s obvious he must win because owner Jimmy Haslam took a huge leap of faith in allowing him to return this year.
I made that clear again in my last post, using the release of the NFL schedule on Thursday night as the perfect opportunity to point out – once again – that Jackson has no room for error.
But with that having been said, I will – once again – declare emphatically that I think Jackson will do it. I think he will do enough – perhaps even more than enough – to prove to Haslam and everybody else that he’s the guy to guide the Browns to where they eventually want to go.
What that exactly is – or must be – I’m not sure right now. I don’t think anyone – Haslam included – knows what it is. But like a good piece of art, Haslam – and the rest of us – will know what it is when we see it. After all, the eye test is always the best test – the ultimate test.
Haslam has done everything he could to give Jackson the best chance to be successful, including bringing in a number of new assistant coaches, most importantly offensive coordinator Todd Haley, who will take a huge burden off Jackson by calling the plays and completely running the offense. In that way, then, Jackson can concentrate fully on being the head coach, which should have been the case all along.
And Haslam has also protected himself and the Browns by adding Haley, for if Jackson fails to cut it, the owner can turn to Haley, who has NFL head-coaching experience, and make him the head coach.
But I don’t think that will be necessary. I don’t think it will come to that.
