Head coach Hue Jackson said Monday in his team’s season-ending press conference that he figures that if the Browns go 1-15 again next season, he’ll be “swimming in that lake over there.”
The only way for Jackson to stay out of Lake Erie is for the Browns to win in 2017.
The only way for the Browns to win is for them to find their franchise quarterback.
And Jackson reiterated Monday that he is certain he will find his man.
That – the need to get a quarterback — was the theme when Jackson was hired a year ago. It was clear that it was the issue around which his job success would be determined.
It was the issue again in the offseason workouts.
And in training camp.
And in the preseason.
And in the regular season.
It will remain that way, too.
There will be a lot of other questions, instances and circumstances that will come up as the Browns’ full-scale rebuilding effort continues on. All of them will no doubt be important, or else they wouldn’t come up.
But all of these will pale in comparison to the issue of the Browns finding their guy at quarterback. It is, in fact, the biggest chunk of the rebuilding task – by far.
Indeed, if you want to follow the Browns and their development, then follow the quarterback search. You don’t need to do anything more than that, really.
Keep that in mind. Hue Jackson is. He has to. His employment depends on it.
So do his chances of remaining dry.
