Why This Browns Defense May Be One for the Ages

This outstanding Browns defense is led by end Myles Garrett, the greatest defender at any position in their history and one of the best overall, at any position.

The guy is incredible, nearly impossible to block, just like running back Jim Brown was nearly impossible to tackle.

But there is something — and someone — else off that defense who is also historic in rookie linebacker Carson Schwesinger.

Schwesinger joins Clay Matthews in 1978 and Chip Banks (1982) as the only Browns linebackers in history who were outstanding right out of the gate as rookies. That’s rare air. And, as it turns out, the trio played at two colleges that are crosstown rivals in Los Angeles in Schwesinger (UCLA) and Matthews and Banks (USC).

Matthews has been close for a while now to getting inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, while Banks would have already been enshrined if he had not gotten sidetracked by off-the-field issues. We’re not saying Schwesinger will match them, but he’s off to fantastic start in coordinator Jim Schwartz’s scheme.

And speaking of Schwartz, this is simply another reason why that no matter what happens with head coach Kevin Stefanski and his staff at the end of the season, the Browns must be certain to retain Schwartz for next year and beyond, at least as the coordinator but perhaps also as the head coach if that job opens up and if he would be willing to give that position another try after having previously served with the Detroit Lions.

For those watching at the rest of the season at home, now’s a good time to set up your space for the stretch run. A Browns fleece throw blanket makes those couch sessions better, and a team-logo pint glass set adds some game-day spirit.
