In 1963, Blanton Collier’s decision to start Frank Ryan paid off with an NFL Championship a year later. In 1968, Bill Nelsen replaced an injured Ryan and sparked the Browns to back-to-back deep playoff runs.
In 1980, MVP Brian Sipe turned the Browns into the beloved Kardiac Kids. And in 1988, Super Bowl hopes were dashed when Earnest Byner missed a blitz pickup and Bernie Kosar went down with an elbow injury in the season opener.
The lesson across the decades is crystal clear: If the Browns have a quarterback, they have a chance. If they don’t, they’re going nowhere.
2015 Revisited — Manziel and Missed Potential
In 2015, Cleveland hoped it had finally found its answer at quarterback in Johnny Manziel, the 2014 first-round pick. But Manziel’s elbow injury that preseason—and his off-the-field immaturity—set the tone for a career that never materialized. The Browns were still searching for “The Guy”.
At the time, head coach Mike Pettine and GM Ray Farmer were hanging their futures on Manziel’s development. If they could find the answer at QB, the rest of the roster was strong enough to compete. But Manziel wasn’t the answer. And they were both gone by 2016.

The current battle in training camp mirrors years past. Promising young QBs are competing, but the franchise still hasn’t locked in long-term stability at the most important position in sports.
Why This Still Matters in 2025
The Browns have improved elsewhere—strong offensive line, elite pass rushers, and dynamic skill players. But the gap at quarterback continues to define the ceiling of the team.
It’s no coincidence that the AFC North’s most successful teams—the Bengals with Joe Burrow, the Ravens with Lamar Jackson, and the Steelers with their historical continuity—all have (or had) clarity under center.
