Why Can’t the Browns be more like the Giants?

Former Browns offensive coordinator Brian Daboll is now also the former head coach of the New York Football Giants after having been fired the other day just over 3-1/2 years into his tenure.

The Giants are 2-8 and are set to miss the playoffs for the third straight season.

“The past few seasons have been nothing short of disappointing, and we have not met the expectations for this franchise. We understand the frustrations of our fans, and we will work to deliver a significantly improved product,” Giants President John Mara and Chairman Steve Tisch said in a released statement.

In Daboll’s first year in 2022, he took over a Giants team that had had five straight losing seasons, and eight in nine years, and guided it to a 9-7-1 record and, as a wild card, its first playoffs berth in six seasons. He went 6-11 and then 3-14 the next two years to put himself on thin ice heading into 2025. More losing just exacerbated the problem.

I like Daboll — he’s a really good guy and a fine offensive coordinator — but his firing was definitely warranted. The Giants want to win, and that is as it should be.

So, then, the question that begs to be asked back home is why can’t the Browns be more like this with their head coach, Kevin Stefanski, whose résumé is a whole lot worse than that of Daboll? Indeed, don’t the Browns want to win? I know the fans sure want to win.
