What you need to watch against Vikings

The most important position in team sports is quarterback.

If you have a good one, then you have a chance regardless of what the rest of your football team is like.

The second-most important position is backup quarterback.

He is one play away from being the starter. If you have a capable one, then you had better pray that the starter doesn’t get hurt. But be aware that God probably doesn’t care about that, for he is already pretty busy with other much more important things.

And the No. 3 position area is the offensive and defensive lines. If you aren’t strong there — if you can’t win the line of scrimmage, or at least hold your own —  then you are going to get dominated.

With that in mind, then, those are the areas at which I want to see the Browns excel when they host the Minnesota Vikings on Saturday at Cleveland Browns Stadium in the second of their three preseason games.

Backup quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson did a nice job — he was by far the best player on the field for the Browns — in their lopsided loss to the Green Bay Packers in the opener last Saturday. Since consistancy Is the name of the game in sports, I want to see him do it again.

The lines on both sides of the ball, especially in running and defending the run, were abysmal against the Packers. The linemen need to atone for that and get much, much, much better.

The Vikings are not a good team overall, so the chance for Thompson-Robinson and the linemen to do the job is certainly there.

We’ll see.
