What we already know about the gamble

So, will that gamble – The Gamble, more appropriately — with quarterback Deshaun Watson pay off for the Browns?

There’s no way of knowing that now, or even for the foreseeable future. It all has to play out to its logical end, whenever, however and whatever that is.

But this much we already know:

*The Gamble has made the Browns front-page news nationally and internationally, day after day, sometimes for not the best reasons.

*It has divided Browns fans into two groups, at times within the same family, of those that, for moral reasons and Watson’s highly-questionable morals, are very much against The Gamble and very much against the Browns for going through with it, and of those that, for football reasons and Watson’s highly-regarded football abilities, are very much for it and very much for the Browns for going through with it.

*It has tarnished the reputation of General Manager Andrew Berry for the horrifically clumsy way he handled the exit of Watson’s predecessor, Baker Mayfield. A public execution or stoning would have been less nasty.

*It has made the Browns impossible to peg for the 2022 season those who make preseason predictions. If Watson plays all or most of the season, then they can play with anyone in the NFL and have a chance to not just get to the Super Bowl, but also to win it. But if Watson misses most if not all of the season, then, with backup Jacoby Brissett at quarterback, there’s no way they can compete with the best teams and they will have no chance of just making the playoffs, let alone advancing in them.

*And it has made all Browns fans take a good, long look at themselves, their values, their allegiance to the team and the importance – or not – of winning at all costs.
