What if we’re all wrong about Watson?

In my previous post about Browns co-owner Dee Haslam having celebrated her 70th birthday on Friday, I mentioned her having a strong voice on the team.

That was the case especially during the 2023 trade to get quarterback Deshaun Watson, the man who is the subject of numerous allegations of sexual misconduct involving women.

While that controversy is certainly still there — very much, in fact, and rightfully so — it has cooled just a bit. Time does that with just about everything like that, you know, even the seediest and most offensive stuff.

Now, the storyline on Watson has changed. It is that, because of injuries keeping him off the field in his first two seasons, and also his spotty play, at best, when he was  available, he and the deal are looked upon as heading down the road toward being a colossal flop, an unmitigated disaster, in that the Browns gave up three first-round picks in the NFL Draft and then signed him to a new, five-year, fully-guaranteed $230 million contract.

It has been a collective, “Ugh!”

The Browns have a stacked roster, but they need Watson, being the kind of superstar passer he was for the Houston Texans, to get to where they want to go, to their first Super Bowl, and then to win
It.

Hardly anyone anywhere, especially outside Cleveland, thinks Watson will be able to do that.

But we have to be honest, fair and objective in wondering what if those people turn out to be wrong? What if Watson gets his mojo back? What if he lights it up and shocks the world, allowing the Browns to do the same?

Think about that for a moment. It is definitely not out of the realm of possibility.

It is exciting.
