What if one of them were coaching the Browns?
Two quick things:
*As I watched San Francisco edge the Los Angeles Rams last Thursday night, and New England upset the previously undefeated Bills in Buffalo on Sunday night, I couldn’t help but to think about 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan and Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel and what it would be like if they were the head coach of the Browns. Shanahan was offensive coordinator in Cleveland a decade ago, while Vrabel spent last year with the Browns as a coaching advisor. I wrote last year that the Browns should talk to Vrabel about taking over the club. In both cases — Shanahan got tired of all the dysfunction and ran out of town — none of the geniuses in Berea with seven- and eight-figure salaries had enough common sense to see the value of giving the head coaching job to either of those men. Instead, we’re stuck with Kevin Stefanski. Sigh. Ugh.

*Monday was the 39th anniversary of the Browns ending the Three Rivers Jinx with a 27-24 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Oct. 6, 1986. Gerald “Ice Cube” McNeil returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown just before halftime, and Clay Matthews sealed the deal late in the fourth quarter by forcing a fumble by quarterback Mark Malone on a keeper that was recovered by Eddie Johnson. It was the first of three straight Browns victories in Pittsburgh. The Browns haven’t won many games over there since then and will be underdogs when they meet on Sunday at what used to be known as Heinz Field.
