Where’s Allen Iverson when you need him?
When the tail starts wagging the dog, then you’ve got a problem.
With that, then, the Browns have a problem.
We’re talking about the Browns’ rookie mini camp this Friday-Sunday.
The team will work at Browns Headquarters in Berea on Friday and Sunday, but, no doubt because of a big push by the ticketing and marketing departments, Saturday’s two-hour, 10-minute practice will be at FirstEnergy Stadium as part of the club’s Fan Fest.
This is the first time the Browns have held a rookie mini camp practice at their stadium.
Hopefully, it will be the last time.
This is a bad idea.
No, more than that, it is a terrible, horrible, ignorant and stupid idea.
These guys are rookies who are working with a pro team for the first time. If they can walk and chew gum at the same time without tripping over their feet and falling down into a heap, then it will be a grand day. To put them into a 68,000-seat stadium is ramping up that newness and nervousness a thousand times. Once they fall, they might be able to get back up.
These rookies don’t need it. They need to be practicing Saturday on a practice field in Berea, far away from all that fanfare, not on a field on which games are played. Imagine that, holding practice on a practice field. Will wonders never cease?
As rookies, they’ve got a lot to learn. Just with that, their heads will be swimming. But on Saturday, their heads will be swimming away. Nothing good will be accomplished. They will be awe-struck. They will be concentrating more on their surroundings than on their work.
Like I said, though, this is not head coach Hue Jackson’s brainstorm. He knows better than to do this.
This is something cooked up by ticketing and marketing people.
It sounds like something Alec Scheiner would have done. But he is the former Browns president, not the current one, so the catalyst behind it must be someone who worked under him.
The Browns are looking up at the three other teams in the AFC North. To close that gap, they need to play better. And the only way to play better is to practice better.
Nowhere in that equation did I say anything about a circus sideshow, which is what Saturday’s practice will be.
