Vogt Praised, Stefanski Scorned: A Tale of Two Cleveland Coaches

It’s akin to your new next-door neighbor landscaping his yard and adding a deck in the back that are both worthy of being included in the magazine “Homes Beautiful,” while at your house — the one you’ve lived in for six years — the septic field continues to leak to the surface, causing a stench throughout the neighborhood,  and  there is still so much junk in your garage that your children’s bicycles can’t be stored inside. It is why your place is up for The Eyesore of the Year award.

Yes, that’s the way it remains with the Browns as compared to the Guardians.

The Guardians’ Stephen Vogt has just been named American League Manager of the Year for the second time in as many seasons with the team. He guided Cleveland to its second consecutive Central Division title following the biggest comeback in Major League history. It is the first time in franchise history that a manager has taken the team to the playoffs in both of his first two years.

When Terry Francona stepped down for health reasons after the 2023 season, fans fretted that the Guardians would not be able to find a capable successor. Then when Vogt was hired, they worried some more because they had never heard of him. Their fears turned out to be unwarranted.

Regarding the Browns, the situation is just the opposite, with fans screaming for the firing of Kevin Stefanski as the team, at 2-7 and with the NFL’s worst offense and special teams, is headed for another horrible finish.

It used to be that the rest of the teams in town looked at the Browns as the standard bearers. Not anymore. And that stinks.
