Despite what you may have heard elsewhere in some corners, uniforms are a big deal in all sports, especially football.

And nowhere are they more important than – or perhaps even as important as – than they are in Cleveland with the Browns.

It has always been the case, and it will always continue to be the case, as evidenced – even to the biggest naysayers — by the raucous reaction when the Browns unveiled their new/old uniforms recently. People were chomping at the bit all that morning, and even in the days leading up to that day, waiting breathlessly for the noon unveiling.

In Cleveland, the reason for the fans liking the old-school look of the new uniforms is that it takes them back to a much better, much more successful time in team history. But whatever the reason for fans anywhere liking, or disliking, their team’s uniforms in any market, the fact of the matter is that uniforms are a statement of what a team, an organization, wants to be. It’s that way in any profession. You dress for success.

If you show up at work looking good, the intonation is that you feel good about yourself and you’re ready to perform well. And if you show up looking like a slob – like you just fell off the turnip truck, as a relative used to say – then the intonation is that you think you’re a slob and you’re not ready at all to perform well.

It’s just that simple. It really is.

Do you show up at work in a dirty t-shirt, ragged pants and filthy, goofy-looking tennis shoes? No, of course not. You’d be sending the wrong message to everyone.

That’s what the Browns’ former uniforms from 2015-19 were. When the Browns wore them, they didn’t look like the Browns.

Now they do again, thankfully.

With the uniforms being right again, those running the Browns must build a team that plays as well as those uniforms look. Hey, Browns execs, don’t mess anymore with the uniforms. Instead, keep messing with the roster, because that still needs work.
