THE TOP GUYS TALK ON THE EVE OF CAMP

Browns training camp always begins with a press conference the previous day involving the man running the football end of the organization and the head coach.

Sashi Brown, who is the executive vice president of football operations, and Hue Jackson, who is beginning his second season as head coach, addressed the media on Wednesday.

Here are a few highlights from what they said:

*Top draft choice Myles Garrett is “ready to go,” according to Jackson, after missing most of the spring work with injuries. He will start at defensive end.

*The top pick from 2016, wide receiver Corey Coleman, who also got hurt in the spring and had to sit out, is good to go, too, although the Browns will go slowly with him. Coleman, who had a disappointing rookie season, has to make a big leap forward.

*Cody Kessler will go into camp – today’s first practice is set for 3-5:30 pm. – will go into camp as the starting quarterback. That’s hardly news, for Jackson has said that since the spring. Kessler knows the offense better than Brock Osweiler, who was acquired in an offseason trade, and rookie DeShone Kizer. That knowledge is a big deal to the coach.

*Jackson wants to have his regular-season starter named before the preseason opener. He has said many times before as well.

*Asked if the Browns will add a veteran wide receiver, Brown said the club “will continue to look.” Translated, that means the Browns will add one. And that’s good, because the position area is week.

*Asked how the Browns plan to use rookie safety Jabrill Peppers, Jackson said, “Every which way I can.” The Browns really like the Michigan product.

*Here’s the best answer of the day. When asked how to develop young players on a team that has not had many wins in recent years, Jackson replied, “You start winning.” He’s right. It’s the only way to do it.

But enough talking already. It’s finally time to play football.
