While the Browns, coming off a 21-7 home loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, continue to try to figure out their quarterback problems — that which, we must keep pointing out, they caused by their colossal mishandling of the trade for, and the $230 million signing of, Deshaun Watson, who can’t play — we need to look around at what’s going on elsewhere in the NFL.
And when we do, we see that Baker Mayfield — you remember him, don’t you? — continues to play well. Despite throwing to a Tampa Bay Buccaneers receivers corps that has been decimated by injuries, he still managed to complete 22 of 27 passes for 288 yards and four touchdowns, with one interception, on Sunday in a 40-17 dismantling of the Los Angeles Chargers, a team that lost to the Chiefs on a last-play field goal. The Bucs, who are 8-6 and in first place in the NFC South because of the guile and will of Mayfield, closed the game by scoring 30 unanswered points to win their fourth straight.
For comparison’s sake, Browns quarterback Jameis Winston passed for 146 yards and no scores with three picks on Sunday.
Mayfield, whose head coach is former Browns defensive backs coach Todd Bowles, has thrown for 3,627 yards and 32 touchdowns, with 14 interceptions, on the year. Too bad he’s not good enough to play for the astute football men running the Browns.
