Three Key Issues Facing Cleveland Sports Right Now

Some thoughts on three big issues:

*Betcha the other leagues, teams are watching

The Browns and the rest of the NFL, the Cavaliers and the remainder of the NBA and, of course, all of the rest of the teams in Major League Baseball are no doubt keeping an eye on what’s going on with the Guardians, where the suspensions of Emmanuel Clase, one of the best closers in the game, and Luis Ortiz, a starting pitcher who was making big strides, may have ended any hopes that the team could make the playoffs this season and has also drastically altered the club’s plans at the trading deadline. It’s great in that all of these pro sports leagues are in bed with legalizing gambling since it provides so much revenue, but the effort to keep players from getting involved themselves — a real no-no — clearly isn’t working. This can really damage these sports, making them appear to have a little pro wrestling in them. Ugh! When a Browns running back fumbles the ball, did he intend to do it? Did that defender miss that tackle on purpose? Yikes!

A Level Playing Field:

Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski and his offensive assistants are doing their best to make the quarterback derby a fair competition, which is what they absolutely must do. But the same needs to be done in how the media is handling its coverage of it. Shadeur Sanders got blasted — and rightfully so — for his reckless and dangerous driving, and then his laissez-faire attitude about it initially. But where is that same scrutiny — in a real positive way — when the rookie said and did all the right things in all the right way when he circled back and addressed the incidents again recently? Come on, be fair to the kid!

For the four model:

I really like that Browns General Manager Andrew Berry suggested the other day that he could see the team keeping all four quarterbacks, veterans Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett and rookie Dillon Gabriel in addition to Sanders. Yes, the Browns need to address all the many needs they have at other positions, but until they figure out some things about the quarterback situation, this overall team rebuild will not begin in earnest.
