In my last post, I talked about the fact that Kevin Hogan being granted permission to seek a trade doesn’t affect the Browns’ quarterback situation in any way, shape or form.
It just doesn’t. Hogan wasn’t going to play anyway.
But there is a Browns quarterback – a former one, that is – whose presence could affect a team in the AFC North. It comes with the fact that the Baltimore Ravens signed Robert Griffin III the other day.
He will start out as a backup and, barring an injury to Joe Flacco, likely will remain there. But Flacco didn’t play that well at times last season, and should he struggle again, in turn causing the offense overall to struggle again, it’s possible – possible, not probable – that head coach John Harbaugh would insert RG3 to jump-start things.
The Pittsburgh Steelers remain the class of the division. The Ravens finished in second place last season at 9-7, which put them four games behind the Steelers. They lost both of their games to Pittsburgh, so they have to figure out a way to win those games and close the gap. To do so, they have to fortify themselves at quarterback much more so than they were in 2017.
RG3 could – could – help the Ravens do just that. But as the Browns knew when they signed him in 2016 and had substantiated even further after he played for them that season, he has a real problem staying healthy. And, of course, any player – especially a quarterback – must stay healthy.
Injuries destroyed his brief time in Cleveland, and they destroyed his career with the Washington Redskins, who drafted him No. 2 overall out of Baylor in 2012. After being cut by the Browns, he sat out last season and is back to full health again.
What also has to happen for RG3 to have success in Baltimore – and I think Browns fans would agree with me on this – is that he has to learn when to stay in the target and when to get out of it, either to buy time to find a receiver or to take off and run. He still hasn’t figured that out. Too many times, he’s betwixt and between on that all-important decision.
But regardless, he’s still better – much better – than anyone who was backing up Flacco last season.
That’s what the Ravens know, and it’s what the Browns know, which is why they cleaned out their quarterback room completely from last season in adding starter Tyrod Taylor and backup Drew Stanton, and will continue to do so – in a major way — by getting their supposed franchise quarterback with the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft in less than three weeks.
Let’s hope the Browns’ franchise guy has a much better career than RG3, drafted by the Redskins six years ago as their franchise guy, has had.
