Of all of the many he spoke during new Browns head coach Hue Jackson’s introductory press conference on Wednesday evening, there was one word – with just three letter — that resonated the most.
Win.
“I came here to win,” Jackson said.
Hallelujah!
The Browns finally have a head coach who knows what his most important task is, what he was brought there to do, what he must ultimately do – a lot of, really – in order to keep his job.
He must win.
Previous Browns head coaches in this expansion era have talked about a lot of things – the process, laying a foundation, establishing a mindset, etc., as if that was what they had been charged with. And while all those are certainly crucial to winning, it is winning – having more points on the scoreboard than your opponent at the end of the game – that stands alone as the measure of success of a coach and his team.
The process is winning. The foundation that’s being laid is to win. It’s a mindset of winning that’s being established.
It’s time to win. There’s been way too much losing in this expansion era.
Jackson gets that. He really gets that. As Herm Edwards says, it’s why you play the game.
And with that one word – win – he won me over as he heads to the starting line.
