So, who will start at quarterback for the Browns in their regular-season open?
Here’s a reason why, and why not, for each of the four competitors:
*Joe Flacco — WHY: He could go to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and has good amount left in the tank: WHY NOT: He is more valuable to the Browns as a back-up, being the steadying hand to come into a tense situation.
*Kenny Pickett — WHY: He was a first-round NFL Draft pick, has a season of starting experience and is young, so he has a chance to improve. WHY NOT: He seemed to prove in Pittsburgh that he will never be a long-term answer.
•Dillon Gabriel — WHY: He’s very smart and was a big-time producer last year for a great team that won the title in a great conference. WHY NOT: He’s too small to take the pounding necessary to be the long-term answer, and he’s more valuable to the Browns as a backup with a package of plays every week.
*Shedeur Sanders — WHY: He has the most talent — by far — in this quartet, is the only one with a chance to be the long-term answer and could refine his skills for the pro game under the tutelage of Flacco. WHY NOT —It’s not a given that he will be open to coaching from someone other than his dad.
