THE WHOLE TRUTH, AND NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH: PART I
By STEVE KING
I’m done.
Actually, I’m more than done.
I’m steaming mad. I’m fed up. I can’t take it – I won’t take it – anymore.
It’s time – after nearly 50 years – to tell the whole story of the Browns-Pittsburgh Steelers rivalry, not just the bits and pieces that have been sorted through by the history revisionists as they try to find what fits to further their cause, and brazenly ignore that which doesn’t. These are the people who never let the truth stand in the way of a good story.
Before I start, though, let me be perfectly clear about this: I will have more to say about this in posts in the immediate future because … well, there’s so much to say, but the fact of the matter in the here and now – the truth, no matter how much it may hurt to write it, read it and say it and think about it and chew on it and embrace it — is that the Browns’ dignity, and everything they’ve tried to build over the years – all the years, dating all the way back t o the first year in 1946 – has taken a real hit with the utter stupidity of defensive end Myles Garrett at the end of last Thursday night’s 21-7 victory over Pittsburgh at FirstEnergy Stadium.
That he has been suspended for the year may be too short of a penalty, for what happened – what he so stupidly (there’s that root word of “stupid” again) did – has no place not just in sports, but anywhere in society as well.
How do you explain that to your kid?
To your spouse or significant other?
To your friends at work?
To anybody and everybody who knows how much you love the Browns and live and die with these games?
The answer is that you can’t.
You just can’t.
And that’s the hardest part.
But where do the Steelers come in?
Ah, I’m glad you asked.
That’s coming in my next post, and perhaps even one after that. Yeah, I’m pretty sure there will be one after that – at least one.
Stay tuned.
