The toughest part of the season

Bill Belichick is not a touchy-feely kind of guy.

Hardly, right?

Neither is Romeo Crennel.

Or Butch Davis.

So, when I personally saw all of these men get emotional during this time of year when they served as head coach of the Browns, I got a clear pictute of just how tough cutdown day really is.

All NFL teams must be down to the regular-season roster limit of 53 by 4 p.m. Tuesday. With that, then, head coaches, for decades now, have had to cut players they’ve been with for weeks, months, years and quash their NFL dreams, at least temporarily. Those meetings — and conversations —in the coach’s office are excruciatingly difficult. None have been any more so than the one in 1981 when Belichick cut linebacker Eddie Johnson, one of the most popular players in team history and a guy who had been with the Browns for a decade.

These conversations are happening all over the league at this very moment. For all the glitz and glamour of the NFL, this is the ugly underbelly that no one wants to see.
