The Browns went into this season in desperate need of a talented young quarterback around whom they could build.
The player they eventually went to after their first choice, Dillon Gabriel, failed miserably and then got hurt, was added as a replacement for the AFC squad for the Pro Bowl on Monday. His name is Shedeur Sanders.
I’m extremely interested to see how the Browns react to this.
While I am waiting for that — possibly forever because the Browns may well just pretty much ignore it and move on — I would think that if a rookie quarterback got selected for the Pro Bowl, even if it were as a replacement, then he should have a pretty good chance of starting next season.
But because it is Sanders, and not the chosen one, Gabriel, I don’t know that he gets that opportunity free and clear.
Somebody needs to explain that to me.
The Browns’ last two great quarterbacks, Brian Sipe and Bernie Kosar, didn’t get selected for the Pro Bowl squad as rookies.
The fact that Sanders did should tell everybody something, and it is that while the Browns continue to look high and low for their quarterback, the guy who could be the answer is right under their noses and they just refuse to admit it, for whatever reason.
Perhaps the Browns don’t think much of Sanders, but somebody out there does because he will be at the Pro Bowl. How many other Browns players can say that?
And while we’re talking about quarterbacks who do not get their just due, we certainly need to mention Sam Arnold. For the first part of his NFL career, he failed miserably and was mocked repeatedly for it. He was the punch line for a lot of jokes and the subject of plenty of snide comments.
But here he is now turning in his second consecutive great season, only this time helping take his team, the Seattle Seahawks, to the Super Bowl after Sunday’s 31–27 win over the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC Championship Game.
I think we all owe him an apology. If we are going to chastise the guy when he struggles, them we have to praise him — tremendously so, in this respect — when he gets to the Super Bowl.
Congratulations, Shedeur Sanders and Sam Darnold! You both are so deserving of it.
