Like it or not, understand it or not and agree with it or not, Browns owners Jimmy and Dee Haslam have a reason for keeping head coach Kevin Stefanski and General Manager Andrew Berry despite all the problems with the team.
They learned that — and no doubt many other valuable things — from their time being a minority ownership pair with the team the Browns play on Sunday, the Pittsburgh Steelers.
As the Haslams observed, whether it’s people, plans or procedures, the Steelers carefully make their decisions and then stick with them, refusing to waver on them, even when they don’t work out at first. Indeed, when the boat rocks — and it does so from to time for all NFL teams, even the best ones — they just hold on a little tighter until the waves subside and the water becomes calm again.
Now, the Steelers are not stubborn or stupid, so they’re not going to stay the course if the waters keep raging and it’s obvious that there must be change. But that is a last resort. They are going to give it every chance to succeed.
So, then, the Haslams initially picked Stefanski and Berry because they liked them and had confidence in what they could do, so they’re simply going to hold on tightly and ride out the storm.
Too many Browns regimes in this expansion era have not had the patience to do that, and it has caused numerous problems.
Let’s hope that in the end, we find that the Haslam’s were right.
