The NFL Proves How Simple and Fair Playoff Selection Can Be

The NFL does it right when it comes to qualifying for its playoffs.

There are requirements that must be met, and a whole series of tie-breakers have been set up to separate teams that are neck-and-neck.

Everybody knows the drill. There is no human subjectivity involved. Either you get in, or you don’t. When the field is announced at the end of the regular season, there are no arguments from teams that thought they were cheated. That puts the focus on the games themselves, which is as it should be.

The College Football Playoff is just the opposite, and that’s the problem. A committee meets behind closed doors and picks the teams for the 12-team field through a process that does not seem consistent. Teams that fall just short of making it don’t blame themselves but rather the system. It takes away — a great deal — from the upcoming games.

Once again, the NFL stands out. It’s not perfect, but its standards make the competition fair and legitimate.
