The Line on the Line: The Browns’ Biggest Problem Is Still Up Front

No matter who is their general manager, head coach and starting quarterback, what does matter for the Browns next year is finding offensive linemen, and not just one or two, either.

Indeed, the Browns need to almost completely overhaul that position group.

It’s a need that’s actually been there for a while but has not been adequately addressed, a mistake that has to laid at the feet of General Manager Andrew Berry. It absolutely can’t be ignored any longer, however, for it is the Browns’ most pressing need. Yes, of course, the Browns also have to identify their quarterback for next season, but unlike that position, which has a talented rookie in Shedeur Sanders, there is no young players even close to that level on the line.

We’ve seen that for really two seasons now. There is way too much of a push defensively, keeping the Browns from running the kind of offense they want. Injuries on the line have caused problems, certainly, but even when everyone was healthy, it wasn’t a good group. It was a mess.

Sanders has a big arm and has no problem throwing deep passes. But he couldn’t try to really do that Sunday in the 23-20 loss to the Buffalo Bills because he was under seige even on the short and intermediate routes, and it will be much the same case this Sunday when the Pittsburgh Steelers come to town.

If that’s going to change next season — and it must for the good of everyone involved — then the Browns have to really go to work.
