THE GREATEST ERROR EVER

By STEVE KING

Who saw that coming?

Way, way back when, during last season when serious talk surrounding the possibility of Tom Brady leaving the New Patriots in free agency this offseason started to surface, who saw his landing place being Tampa Bay?

The Buccaneers?

Yeah, right. Nobody predicted that one.

It was strange enough that Brady left probably the greatest dynasty ever in pro football history, and much, much stranger still that he did so to a team like the Bucs.

But on the other hand, I’m glad it was the Bucs.

Why?

Because their head coach, former Browns assistant Bruce Arians, is a really, really good guy, and he certainly deserves a chance to make, at this late stage of his coaching career, one last run at a Super Bowl championship.

Sure, the Bucs have a lot of other holes to fill, but the mere fact they now have Brady makes them a legitimate threat to at least get to the Super Bowl, if not win it. Arians is a great offensive mind, and I’m anxious to see what happens when he and Brady put their heads together.

OK, but what about the Patriots and head coach – and former Browns head coach – Bill Belichick? I think Belichick – and Brady as well – are going to eventually really, truly regret their stubbornness, finally agreeing to disagree and part ways. Maybe, the greatest error ever.

Belichick is never, ever going to find another quarterback even remotely close to Brady, who is probably the greatest of all-time.

And Brady is never, ever going to find another head coach even remotely close to Belichick, who is probably the greatest of all-time.

Shouldn’t two guys who are the greatest of all-time find a way to stay together to have a chance at even more greatness?

Yes.

Yes, they should.

And shouldn’t the need to do that be even more important given that both Belichick and Brady are nearing the end of their careers?

Yes.

Yes, it should.
