Thoughts from Steve King on the Browns’ 26-8 loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday at Huntington Bank Field — plus a few Browns-themed Amazon picks for fans looking to upgrade their gear:
The Browns have the best defense in their history and their worst special teams ever, especially in covering and returning punts and kicks. Their kicker is getting better, and they have a good punter. Special teams can be why you win, but they should never be why you lose and that was certainly the case in this game.
• Fan pick: Upgrade your gameday setup with a Cleveland Browns Sideline Beanie – great for winter games.
Shedeur Sanders easily played well enough to get another start at quarterback. He did a good job handling the gale-force wind. He’s not the story this time.
• Fan pick: Browns long-sleeve thermal tees for cold-weather games.
And speaking of the weather, those horrific conditions are why the Browns are building a new indoor stadium. Nobody wants to play in that or sit in that stuff and watch football. It’s not 1955 anymore. When you’re in a northern climate, you should have an indoor facility so as to get out of the elements. Kudos to Browns owner Jimmy Haslam for making it happen. It is long overdue. Haslam has done a lot of crazy things, but he sure hit the nail in the head this time.
• Fan pick: Stay warm during outdoor games with a Cleveland Browns insulated blanket.
Getting back to the offense, rookie Quinshon Judkins is already a very good running back and he has a chance to be elite.
• Fan pick: Browns player tees and hoodies—perfect for repping rising stars.
Another rookie, tight end/wide receiver Harold Fannin Jr., continues to get better and better and has a bright future as well.
• Fan pick: A Browns adjustable hat is an easy way to support the new wave of young players.
Offensive coordinator Tommy Rees did well calling plays. But Rees needs to find a way to get the ball to wide receiver Jerry Jeudy more — much more. What’s going on?
• Fan pick: Jerry Jeudy Browns jerseys are already available:
The Browns will finish 4-13, one win better than a year ago but still horrible. They will beat the Tennessee Titans — I think, I hope — next Sunday but will then lose their last four.
Did the way the Browns lost cause you to fall as hard and as far as I did emotionally after that incredible performance by the Ohio State Buckeyes on Saturday?
• Fan pick: Recover with some fan-cave upgrades like a Browns LED wall sign.
Sunday’s game was one day short of falling on the 51st anniversary of the Browns-49ers game on Dec. 1, 1974, at Cleveland Stadium. Like Sunday, that game was greatly affected by the weather. A huge snowstorm hit Northeast Ohio on Saturday night and continued into Sunday, dumping 24 inches of snow and turning the stadium field into a muddy quagmire. The Browns won 7-0 on a Ken Brown touchdown run. That storm rivals the great 1950 Thanksgiving weekend storm that paralyzed the area.
• Fan pick: Relive memories with a Cleveland Browns history book or memorabilia set.
I never, ever cease to be amazed by the passion of Browns fans, regardless of weather, the record or anything else. Like that defense, they are just the very best.
• Fan pick: Show that passion year-round with a Browns flag for the house or garage.
