Tanking? Sure! Why else would the Browns have hired Hue?
By STEVE KING
At one time, Hue Jackson asserted that the Browns were tanking in the middle to latter stages of the past decade.
He has since recanted those claims, but the NFL is nonetheless investigating them just to be sure.
I can save the investigators a lot of time and trouble. Hey, people, of course the Browns were tanking. They hired Jackson as their coach, didn’t they? Why else would they bring on Ol’ Hilarious Hue, who, in 2 1/2 seasons beginning in 2016, “guided” the team to records of 1-15, 0-16 and 2-5-1 for a sterling overall mark of 3-36-1 before being canned midway through 2018?
There’s no other reason for bringing him on — no other explanation. The guy led all NFL coaches in laughs, chuckles, chortles and guffaws, but not much else, and certainly nothing of value.
He was supposed to be an offensive guy, and that he was, but the kind of offensive turns you off and makes you sick, disgruntled and downright angry. Although Helpless Hue had absolutely no idea what he was doing, he steadfastly remained that he was the right man for the task of rebuilding the Browns.
It was like hiring the guy who built the Hindenburg to design another airship.
I can’t figure out who was a worse Browns head coach in the expansion era, Hideous Hue or Eric “Please Don’t Call Him a Genius” Mangini. They were polar opposites in one respect in that Hyena Hue always tried to create laughter, no matter how dire the situation, while Mean Mangini had the people skills of a snake and the tact of a sledgehammer. He couldn’t tell the truth no matter how hard he tried.
In another respect, though, they were the same person — so under-qualified to do the job that the Browns would have been better served to hire a local high school coach — even a youth coach. At least those coaches had at least a chance of being successful. Both Humorous Hue and Eric the Irascible had no chance whatsoever.
So, in a word, yes, the Browns were indeed tanking. Highlights Hue was just too smart. He figured it out.
